This beautifully carved Indian lintel panel is of considerable age and from South India. It dates to the 18th century and would have come from above a doorway of an Andhra Pradesh home. Constructed from wild jackfruit wood it depicts Lakshmi framed by elephants (Gaja Lakshmi), the attendants, peacocks, lion & monkey carvings are all carved in the typical South Indian style. The lintel panel has many layers of paint and pitch (tar) used for weatherproofing.
These panels come from buildings in India which have fallen into disrepair. The whole piece is covered in a wonderfully rich patina. Smoothed edges show its good age.
Supplied fitted with sturdy hangers for easy wall mounting.
