This iron-bound chest is from Gujarat and dates to the 19th century. It is constructed from teak wood. Most likely it was custom-made for a wealthy family to stash away dowry, family treasures, or cash from the prying eyes of extended family members. Its layers of various coloured old paint give it a 'distressed' finish.
The interior contains a candle compartment and a sturdy iron chain prevents the lid from falling fully open. It has four wheels for ease of movement.
Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India.
